Chemical Peels

It's the procedure of applying chemical solutions such as glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, carbolic acid, etc. to the skin which eventually makes it blister out and thus peel away leaving fresh smooth skin behind. It would free the skin of problems such as wrinkles, dark spots, blemishes, etc... This improves the overall appearance of the skin hence removing the tan and dull look. Chemical peeling may be done on face, neck and hands.

Their major uses are:

  • Treatment of acne
  • Reduction of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Reduces dark spots, freckles, etc.
  • Removal of scars

Peeling of skin makes it more photo sensitive, hence its best to avoid exposure to direct sunlight. If that's not possible one should ensure that sun block lotions and creams containing capable of protection against UVA and UVB rays are used.

Fair skinned people are most suitable for chemical peeling. It is not ideal to treat severe wrinkles, bulges and sagging of skin using this method.

Before the procedure it's important to let the doctor know if you have any allergies, history of cold sores or scarring that keep repeatedly coming back. Certain medications like Retin-A, glycolic acid, etc. must be stopped before the process.

Chemical Peels

Procedure

  • Cleansing the skin to be peeled is the first step.
  • Chemical solutions like glycolic acid, lactic acid , etc. is applied to the cleansed skin. Burning and stinging sensation may be evident for about 10 minutes after the chemical is applied. To reduce this cooling ice packs are applied. In case of deeper skin peels antibiotics and pain killers are administered. During a chemical peel, most people feel a burning sensation that lasts about five to ten minutes, followed by a stinging sensation. Putting cool compresses on the skin may ease that stinging. You may need pain medication during or after a deeper peel.
  • The skin begins to peel off within hours. This peeling would last for about a week to two weeks.
