Skin Pigmentation

Condition where the skin appears abnormally darker or lighter than the rest of the body with discoloration and blotchy feel is termed skin pigmentation. There are skin problems in every race of people. Some of them are rare like the albinism and others like spots and blemishes are quite common. This skin conditions occur due to either excessive or minimal production of melanin which gives color to the skin, eyes and hair. Harmful UV rays are absorbed by melanin, thus protecting the body.

There are two kinds of skin pigmentations.

  • Hypopigmentation: very minimal amount of melanin is produced by the body. Eg. albinism, vitilgo.
  • Hyperpigmentation: excessive production of melanin causes darker and patchier skin to develop. Eg. lamellar ichthyosis, lichen simplex chronicus, melasma.

People suffering from albinism usually have paler hair, eyes and skin. Albinism is a generally inherited skin condition. Vitilgo is also such a disease condition where white patches develop over the body and face, it is believed to be caused due to the auto immune disorder of the body. Vitilgo has also been connected with other diseases like hyperthyroidism and Addison's disease. Melasma is a skin disease that produces dark patches covering the areas of cheeks and nose. It's common during pregnancy due to hormonal variations and diminishes as the child is born.

Skin Pigmentation

Skin pigmentation can occur at different layers of the skin.

  • Epidermal: occurs over the surface area of skin e.g. Sun spots.
  • Dermal: occurs at the deeper layer of skin.
  • Mixed dermal: occurs at both the surface as well as the deeper layer e.g. melasma.
